It Is Not Selfish to Want a Higher Salary

Updated: Aug 18, 2022

Let me paint a picture for you. A free agent football player joins a team. They are given a 1-year contract worth $100k. They have an amazing year. Their efforts directly contribute to the success of the team.

It is time for them to renew. They ask for more money. But they don’t get what they think they deserve. And other players are being paid more. Some players who rarely play the field.

So, they look to other teams. They find a team who will give them what they feel like they deserve.

Are they wrong for doing that? Of course not! So why is it looked down on by some when employees do the same?

We are all free agents. It’s not selfish to want a higher salary. Especially when you can tie your impact to metrics that positively impact a business. Especially when peers are making more who don’t have the same impact.
